Harry Hutson, Ph.D., a Senior Consultant with Innolect Inc., is an executive coach and leadership consultant working from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Harry’s executive coaching practice builds leaders’ self-awareness, a key factor in leadership success–clarity about purpose, affirmation of strengths, acknowledgement of weaknesses, and confidence in the ability to grow and develop.

Harry’s current institutional focus is on nonprofit, public sector, and government agencies whose mission is social–helping make the world a better place to live.

His recent book, coauthored with Martha Johnson, former head of the General Services Administration, Navigating an Organizational Crisis: When Leadership Matters Most, examines the role of leadership in tough times and challenging moments–in healthcare, business, politics, or education. Their book is providing guidance to politicians, soldiers, police chiefs, doctors, deans, and CEOs.

hatty-hutsonAs a coach and consultant, Harry’s major corporate clients have included Bristol-Myers Squibb, Citigroup, Hood Dairy, Lifeline (Philips), Pfizer, Starbucks, and Unilever. For twenty-five years, Harry worked as a leadership and organizational development leader or human resources executive in multinational corporations–Cummins, Avery Dennison, Global Knowledge, and Devon Energy.

Harry has continuously pursued his professional development in study groups with master teachers in psychology and coaching. He is a former Master Coach with the Massachusetts School for Professional Psychology. Harry’s books include Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations (with Barry Dym), and Putting Hope to Work: Five Principles to Activate Your Organization’s Most Powerful Resource (with Barbara Perry). His articles appear in professional journals including HR People + Strategy and Harvard Business Review.

Harry practiced counseling at Harvard Divinity School, where he earned an M.T.S. He has a Ph.D. from Indiana Unversity, an undergraduate degree from Hamilton College, and a masters degree in education from Stanford. He is a Professor of the Practice at Kenan-Flagler School of Business, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

For many years Harry has served on the Board of Directors for the New England Center for Children, a pioneering school for the treatment of autism, with locations in Massachusetts and Abu Dhabi. Harry is also on the Board of Directors for the community shelter and food pantry, Urban Ministries of Durham, North Carolina.
