Do You Lead as a Giant Sequoia?

“Sequoias can live for thousands of years because they grow in groves and their roots interlock. There’s a lesson there for any team — our strength is in our connection.” —Inspired by the National Park Service

As scientists study the longevity of ancient forests, they marvel at the staying power of giant sequoias. These trees rise like giant sentinels, majestic, enduring and deeply connected. Though each tree’s roots are surprisingly shallow, they don’t stand alone. Instead, they thrive in groves with a vast interconnected root system in an underground network that spans up to 80 feet. They share water, nutrients and strength. When storms rage, they hold each other up.

Nature’s Wisdom: Resilience is Rooted in Interdependence

In today’s unpredictable world, organizations face their own storms, economic shifts, technological disruption, talent shortages and strategic uncertainty. We notice that many leaders’ instincts can be to hunker down, isolate themselves or their team, and/or rely solely on individual grit. But just like the sequoias, long-term success depends on how well we zoom out to gain a broader perspective, connect, collaborate and support one another.

Teams that embrace interdependence don’t just survive, they thrive with greater innovation, adaptability, learning and growth. They ask bold questions:

  • How have we strayed from what is most important?
  • How can we work smarter together?
  • What systems can we strengthen internally?
  • What partnerships and resources could amplify our thinking and impact? (strategic partnerships, AI, etc.)
  • How do we keep our people energized and aligned?

Rob Avis, co-founder of Verge Permaculture, a globally-recognized and award-winning design, consulting and education company, challenges us to rethink self-sufficiency and suggests:

“Maybe the question isn’t how do I become more self-sufficient, but how do I become more meaningfully connected to the right systems?”

Resilient leaders leverage their interdependence with “root” systems and engage in meaningful communication when storm clouds loom on the horizon.

At Innolect, we believe nature offers powerful metaphors for leadership. A few years ago, we explored the wisdom of aspens, and now, the sequoias. These trees remind us that growth, sustainability and resilience are collective pursuits. Our clients count on us to coach leaders and facilitate team conversations that unlock creativity, strengthen collaboration and drive results.

Let’s grow stronger—together.
