What Leadership Game Will You Play in 2026?

“Seek above all for a game worth playing. Play as if your life and sanity depend on it, because they do!” — Robert S. de Ropp

At year-end, leaders set goals, chase metrics and drive results. But here’s a deeper question: What game are you intentionally choosing to play in 2026, and will it make the world a better place?

Years ago, members of our community read Robert de Ropp’s The Master Game to gain insight into our pursuits as leaders and consultants. His work describes living life as a series of games. Some games are played to pursue wealth, fame and/or power. Others are played to conform, survive and fit in. And still others may be played to pursue artistic, scientific or spiritual quests. He describes them as:

  • Low Games: Pursuing wealth, fame, power.
  • Neutral Games: Conforming, surviving.
  • High Games: Artistic, scientific, spiritual quests.

He then describes the ultimate pursuit… The Master Game or what Joseph Campbell might call the Hero’s Journey, one where leaders seek a higher purpose and ways to offer greater value for a positive future not just for their careers, but for the broader world.

Yet, when life feels uncertain or overwhelming, many leaders live in “waking sleep,” reacting mechanically to demands and distractions in their lives. The Master Game calls us to wake up, observe ourselves and act with intention.

It’s about playing a game that matters—not just for a career, but for humanity. Growing Self-awareness or “awakening” requires:

  • Self-observation
  • Mindfulness
  • Intentional action
  • Discipline

Are You Ready to Play a Game That Matters?

Will you keep playing the same game, or will you choose to elevate your leadership to leave a greater lasting impact? Consider these three practical steps to start:

  1. Pause and Reflect: Ask yourself—what game have I been playing? Is it aligned with my values and impact?
  2. Choose with Intention: Decide on a game that elevates your leadership and benefits others.
  3. Commit Publicly: Share your chosen game with your team or network. Accountability fuels transformation.

As you enter the new year, make sure you are pursuing a game worth playing…one that is purposeful and ignites your passion, creativity and purpose. Play your “game” as if your life and sanity depend on it—because they do.
